“There is no friend as loyal as a book.” – Ernest Hemingway

Welcome to Galey’s Books.

This is a blog for and about readers and their books.  It’s for those who love books, are inspired by books and want to talk about them. Oh! It’s also a place to come if you want a few recommendations of what to read next.

It grew out of a list of favourite reads I’ve been compiling over the last decade which has developed a kind of cult following.  Subscribers to the list have urged me to take my thoughts on line so here it is.

It will contain book reviews, commentary on the interaction between books and society, and (hopefully) without too much pretentiousness, on occasion, what might be loosely called literary essays.

From time to time there will also be musings on issues as diverse as music, sport politics, food and movies all viewed through the lens of books (and reading more generally).

Comments are encouraged and guest posts are certainly welcome. I hope this blog will become a forum for booklovers to express their views and share their stories.

Thanks for stopping by.  Feel free to subscribe for updates or come back soon when I’ve added more content.

This is great news, now I don’t have to wait a year to get your next batch of book recommendations. I’m currently reading George Saunders’ latest collection of short stories, Tenth of December, on the kindle. A massive brick of a book, Far From the Tree, by Andrew Solomon, is also on the bedside table.

A welcome addition to the blogosphere. Look forward to reading it.
